Lately I've been playing some lan matches with friends and I've take a big liking to Techies, but I have several questions.
How popular are they? (in pubs, etc) Are they banned in competitive dota matches? I'm new to the forums so I'm not sure where to find what heroes are allowed or not. Thanks in advance. |

As far as I know, techies is very uncommon in high level play. This could be because he is a very situational hero, or because he is removed in -RD mode.

Techies stomp pubbies and fail hard in higher-level play unless paired with Dark Seer. I see techies played all the time in pubbies (mostly by nubs that have no idea how to use him properly), but seeing as how most of what they do is countered with truesight, he is not used in higher-level play.

I know Techies is only for fun and it is not commonly used in competitive DotA matches.

Playing Techies in high level play is extremely difficult, you have to anticipate the enemie's moves and plant your mines on places so varying that warding - or even gems - will be ineffective.
However, when you manage that you have a chance to gain incredible advantages: +enemies might spend a lot of money for true sight - without any effectiveness +you have an observer ward for 200 mana with 10 sec cooldown +roaming will be difficult for enemies - they might trip over a mine +in direct team battle, you can deal massive damage with suicide to turn the tides +also in team battle, stasis traps can pwn +when you are not there, you will not die - and thus you are a valuable defender with your mines +you are a perfect item carrier for disables and stuff +ganking in early/mid will be dangerous +landmines own towers Disadvantages: -you will be behind all the heroes (level-technical) -since you need mass mana, you can hardly buy defensive items and you have no escape skill instead of previously planted mines and suicide -your team will lose a fighter in team battles, unless you manage to keep up with the level Well, I'd love to play techies in a Funwar. And even now I love playing him in pubs This post has been edited by Infrisios: Jul 14 2008, 01:39 AM |

Stasis traps are most likely the best skill in the game. Plus if you're a good techies, you should be suiciding early on with runes until about lvl 7, giving your allies in those lanes massive experience, etc. Random stasis traps and mines all over the map give you basically sight of the whole map, plus severely inconveniences enemy creepers or for that matter chasers. If a techies can get a guinsoo, euls, or necrobook, he can still be very useful late game. ex: in the middle of a battle set a stun ward, guinsoo and euls 2 idiots (or the same idiot) and hold them until the stun ward goes off, Rinse, repeat, in 5 secs you can do that again, when you have low health suicide, hopefully with a bloodstone.

I've used techies in war, and against a techies in a war. ours was a superfast push strat. Techies owned face. suicide to clear enemy, and mines > towers. Their techie was mid with rhasta, and just perma suicided our carry. Was really annoying.

I would say Techie is my all time fave hero in pubbies >.<
Every 2 mins, go sideways to get runes (hoping for haste, invis). If possible lane with your team carry and suicide on the mid enemies first to make his level go past the other heroes level. Also to make sure that the carry can survive the harassment from the 2 mid heroes. Then start suiciding on left and right. Buy observer or mine the rune place to gain control of the rune. This always seem to work for me And since I constantly suicide, my teammate level will surpass those of the other team and somehow I always managed to be on the same level as my team mate by mining creep when my suicide cooldown. |

Techies are played way too often in pubs. I'm sure many love to play them, but I find it incredibly annoying to play vs. them.

Techies are missing in the -rd pool for no apparent reason, meaning that you won't see them in most TDA games.
You won't see Techies in competitive play either because all their skills are easily countered with some form of true sight. Most importantly however, having a techies on the team is always like fighting with one hero down because techies can't do much in a team fight. At most, he can lay down 2 mines (1 land, 1 remote) and deal some damage unless you manage to somehow catch the ENTIRE team in like a Black Hole or Reverse Polarity and techies can lay down a stasis for even longer stun. Realistically however, if you are good enough to catch all of them in a reverse polarity and have techies use stasis trap, you might as well take another AoE hero like Lesh and pwn them, while still having Lesh's overall usefulness throughout the game as opposed to techies. |

And that is exactly why I hate Techies. No other hero requires you to ward so many places on the map at once. Most invisible heroes are countered by placing a ward as soon as they engage in a battle. Broodmom is even easier to counter, just place a ward near her webs. For techies, you need to lay wards at all four secret shops, rune spots and even ramps.
I'm not saying that this makes him imbalanced, as in most decent level games the burden of buying wards is shared across the whole team. The problem arises when you're playing against him in pubs with a particularly retarded team (happens way too often) and you're the ONLY guy buying wards. (You can always buy Gem, sure, but Gem has its own problems. Like being useless up ramps.) And why do idiot pubbers always LAUGH when a bunch of them walk into techies mines? "Oh lol, we got killed by mines, that doesn't count" Dammit, I should post in the RAGE thread. |

Pub or not, it depends on how good the player controlling him is. I've seen many pubs and pros too who failed hard with techies...

When I play techies I'm usually the team carrier. It occured to me at the time that we were winning this one time, then I went afk for like ... 9 minutes to test what would happen. Mid and siderax were down at our side. In 9 minutes without the techies. L. O. L.
Anyways, we still won. In my eyes techies is the sickest hero ever because most people will ALWAYS fall for a level 2 mindgame. |

(in pubs, etc) Are they banned in competitive dota matches? I'm new to the forums so I'm not sure where to find what heroes are allowed or not. Thanks in advance. Often techies on the team is like having one player less (or at least half a player less). In pubs, the techies often end up not really contributing to the team. Even in the ih games I play, I often am disappointed by the amount contributed by a techies player. Dont' get me wrong though - some techies players are great - and they play the old school "battle techies" way (and keep very conservatively to this "time honoured traditional" build and playing style). These techies make a positive contribution to the team, and make great pushers, and stalwart defenders (as opposed to merely defenders). I still remember a techies player who went for one level of suicide to stop giving away bounty, and then went a lot of mines to push towers (mining towers FTW) and stasis traps for team battles - he pretty much soloed an AM - it was amazing... |
